"Mark Godden's Little Bit Of Cyberspace Mk.II"
New Quarrying Technology 1.

Year 2000. A saw making a series of parallel cuts across a whitbed bench in Independent Quarry. This stone is extracted without the use of explosives. Experience with this type of cutting technology is paving the way for the eventual underground mining of Portland stone which promises to bring enormous environmental advantages over open quarries.

A wire-saw is used in Bowers Quarry, Portland, to make secondary cuts, squaring blocks of basebed which have been brought straight from the quarry face by a Komatsu WA600-3 fitted with loading forks.
