"Mark Godden's Little Bit Of Cyberspace Mk.II"
Prehistory
It is extremely interesting to note that as part of an archaeological investigation into the un-quarried area above Bowers Quarry; ten minutes field walking produced a rich selection (30 plus pieces) of knapped chert. These were identified by Albion Stone's archaeological expert, Peter Bellamy of Terrain Archaeology, as a likely Bronze Age assemblage (c.1000-2000BC).

A "retouched" chert probably from the Bronze Age found in Bowers Quarry
A scattering of these cherts is commonplace across the whole of Portland as they probably became accidentally mixed with manure (chert knapping probably took place at a settlement which also housed some livestock.) The manure containing some knapped cherts was subsequently collected and spread on the fields as fertilizer.
What I find remarkable is the continuity represented here. These cherts, knapped by some unknown prehistoric stoneworker were found adjacent to a modern quarry being worked by contemporary stone workers. Exactly how far are we from our roots?
