"Mark Godden's Little Bit Of Cyberspace Mk.II"

Salt Pseudomorphs from the Lower Purbeck, Bowers Quarry, Portland.

impressions of cubic halite crystals in lithified sediments. Salt crystals came out of solution as water evaporated from pools on hypersaline tidal flats, adjacent to the sea. Huge slabs of stone covered in these impressions are common. Small bivalve and gastropod fossils are also found in the same horizons which would appear to indicate high seasonal rainfall as conditions in the water would have probably been too salty (as evidenced by the pseudomorphs) to support life during the summer months?
